This article is now defunked as Google has changed its algorithm.

There have been a few articles lately that talk about the fact that UK Google users get different results when having capitalisation in the search term. Personally I do think that this is the case and has been for a while, infact ill prove it.

Google themselves state:

Google searches are NOT case sensitive. All letters, regardless of how you type them, will be understood as lower case. For example, searches for george washington, George Washington, and gEoRgE wAsHiNgToN will all return the same results.

This list features the top 4 leading search engines based on UK Internet usage, ranked by volume of searches for the 4 weeks ending January 26, 2008.

Rank Search Engine Volume

1. google.co.uk 74.11%

2. google.com 14.11%

3. uk.ask.com 3.05%

4. uk.search.yahoo.com 2.18%

Source - Hitwise - January, 2008 - based on volume of searches.

I was very surprised by the fact that ASK is growing faster in the UK than Yahoo. To be fair to Yahoo though, ASK have recently had a marketing campaign running on TV so I would imagine that has helped them leap frog over Yahoo.

Working with Customer Street clients helping them get a better presence on the search engines gives me a buzz.

We recently worked on helping: homersdrivingschool.co.uk get more traffic to the site via our directories and small changes to the site itself. The client chose 40 keywords that they wanted to be found on and we ran a report to see how many were in Google, Yahoo and MSN.
