We all use them, we all know the top three (Google, Yahoo and MSN), but do we really know anything about them and why they exist ?
The definition of a Search Engine:
Websites that enables users to search for information on the internet based on the keywords that they provide. Some of these websites gather information from all across the World Wide Web and furnish them to the user in the order of importance and relevance that it assigns each page based on the entered keyword phrase.
Did you know ?
Google is the most used search engine in the UK. Having a 74% share of all searches made by us in the UK.
Types of Search Engines ?
Search engines are a hugely important part of the web. It is truly impressive what you can turn up by searching for keywords on just any subject. There are really two types of web index, the search spiders or worms which crawl over the web tracing and indexing URL’s they find starting from those submitted, and the structured indices where each URL submitted is checked, and classified.
Going forward:
The internet is growing at a phenomenal rate and will continue to grow even faster due to user friendly tools such as blogs and easy to use website creation software. The search engines are constantly using more complex and clever ways of indexing content on the internet, they want us to use their engine to make a search as they sell advertising space (e.g. google adwords). The reason for this is the better the relevance of the returned results after a search the more we will use that engine. In turn the more money they can pull from its advertisers.
In the coming months:
I will be adding to the search engine watch section of this blog informing you of how the search engines are moving forward and giving tips to help all those of you who have websites to increase your coverage on the engines and what tools the search engines give us that can be used to our gain.
