Writing META tags correctly is a must if you are looking to get your websites pages to work well on the internet.

Metadata is used to by the search engines to index your website

Metadata for a website is sought out and stored in a database by a particular type of Internet robot called a meta crawler. Once stored in a database, metadata can be searched for with a search engine. Careful selection of the keywords, description and the title of a page, which constitutes your metadata, makes it easier for someone to find your site using a search engine.

How to write META Data correctly:

Writing META data correctly to help with listings comes with practice but follow the tips below and you will help benefit the site that you have.

<title>your page title goes here</title>

(TIP: Make the title contain the main keyword phrase you want the page to be found under and make that phrase about 50% of the whole title, also no more than 50 characters).

<mate name =”description” CONTENT=”you description goes here”>

(TIP: Make the description no more than 70 characters long, include the main keyword phrase within the first 5 words of the description).

<mate name =”keywords” CONTENT=”you keywords goes here”>

(TIP: Try to make you keywords specific to the text of the page and try too keep them to about 4 phrases (max) per page).

It is amazing how many people do not use the META data to help with listings on the search engines.

META Data tips to remember:

Do not use the same title, description and keywords on every page of your website, each page will contain different information and so should the META tags. Again I must stress, “make the META data specific to the page its attached and you wont go far wrong“. Google can rank you down if all the pages are the same and may put your pages in Google’s supplemental index. I will go more into this in a future post.

Metadata Conclusion:

Go on give it a try, you will see an improvement in you rankings. Quick note, search engines do not hold as much weight as they used to for the meta data but the <title> is CRITICAL as this can influence search results of your page.
